Home Improvements That Matter Most to Millennials (Part 1 of 2)

A recent study by the National Association of REALTORS® revealed that millennials are in search of turnkey properties and want to steer clear of homes that are in need of potentially pricey repairs.

As you plan your next flip consider the following home improvements that matter most to these young adults, who currently comprise the largest share of home buyers.

Curb Appeal Can Help You Seal the Deal

Curb appeal is your first chance to wow millennials, and any buyer, and to show that your house is the total package. A well-maintained exterior and landscape promise buyers that great things are in store.

To make sure your flip is up to par power wash stained driveways, and siding that has become weathered with green algae. Aged surfaces like house trim and decking should be rejuvenated with a fresh coat of paint and stain. Make sure your gutters are free of leaves and debris.

Kitchens Clench Contracts

Kitchens and baths sell homes, so make sure your kitchen fits the bill.

If your cabinets are dark and dated repaint them in a soft gray, white—or other neutral—to update, brighten, and enlarge the look of your space. Install new hardware in finishes like matte black or brushed brass, and invest in features like under-cabinet lighting.

If you decide to replace your cabinets opt for ones with soft-close drawers and doors, pantry drawers, and the capacity for waste-recycling.

But don’t forget the eye candy in the kitchen, like dramatic geometric light pendants, wall sconces on either side of a stovetop, and anything else that’s thoughtful and unexpected. Millennials, and all buyers for that matter, love to be pleasantly surprised.

Baths Bring Offers

Give your bathroom vanity a facelift with a fresh coat of paint in a soft, neutral tone. Install new faucet hardware and cabinet knobs or pulls. To avoid having to drill new holes be sure that the screw placement for your new hardware coincides with the existing holes before you make a purchase.

If your tub has any minor cosmetic flaws you should have it refinished, which can be relatively quick and inexpensive.
