This style is typically an asymmetrical masonry or stucco home of one or two stories, and usually features steeply-pitched roofs with gables. Oftentimes doors may be half-round or arched and clad with decorative hardware. Also known as the “fairytale” style this type of home has a lot in common with English Cottage, bungalow, and Tudor Revival-style homes. It became popular in America and England in the 1920s.
Mid-Century Modern
Mid-century is a genre of architecture that is characterized by facades with long, flat roofs. Split levels allow multiple-story homes to maintain a horizontal roofline. Open-concept floorplans and multipurpose spaces create a natural flow from one room to the next—an aesthetic that continues to be wildly popular.
Expansive walls of glass that flood rooms with natural light, and sliding doors that open walls and extend living spaces outdoors—as well as invite the outdoors in—are perhaps two of the most dramatic trademarks of mid-century interior design.
Other characteristics of this style include floor-to-ceiling stone fireplaces, terrazzo floors, and wood-planked ceilings.
Mediterranean
The Mediterranean is a classic style influenced by the part of the world from which it gets its name. Plaster surfaces, red tile roofs, curved arch entries with heavy wooden doors, porticos, and balconies are all hallmarks of its design. The Mediterranean became widely popular in the U.S. between 1918 and 1940.
