Want to Paint Your Boring Concrete Steps Do This and Not That

If you have boring concrete steps leading to the front door of your flip a creative paint design can transform them from unremarkable to unforgettable. A little paint and patience is all it takes to make a statement that increases your curb appeal. Heed these do’s and don’ts to take your entry a step ahead of the rest.

Do Clean Carefully

Thoroughly scrub your steps clean using a nylon bristle brush and a degreaser. Concrete must be super clean and free of moisture in order for paint to adhere. Allow your steps to dry for at least 48 to 72 hours, according to the drying times recommended by your degreasing product.

Don’t Skimp on the Prep

If you’re painting a pattern on your steps, such as a border stripe or other design, be sure to take time to properly prep the area. Use a masking tape that’s designed to adhere to concrete, is resistant to sun and moisture, and removes easily and cleanly. Stucco tape, used for stucco installation, is one that comes to mind.

Don’t Use Regular Paint

Just in case you were thinking you could, don’t use regular paint. Concrete is very porous and easily soaks up paint. So use concrete or masonry primer and paint. Use a synthetic roller that has a 1-inch nap, since the long fibers will hold lots of primer and paint for better coverage and a more efficient paint job.

Do Consider That Painted Concrete Can Become Slippery

When painted concrete gets wet it becomes slick, and you not only want your entry to be pretty—you want it to be safe. To decrease the risk of slip and falls mix a non-skid floor finish additive into your paint. This will give the surface of your steps a gritty finish and more traction. Usually the added texture isn’t even noticeable.
